Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (Education Commission -1948) “The library is the heart of all university’s work; directly so as regards its research work and indirectly as regards its educational work which derives its life from research work. Scientific research needs a library as well as its laboratory while for a humanistic research the library is both library and laboratory in one.”(National Knowledge Commission - 2005) "Libraries have a recognized social function . . . serve as local centres of information, learning and gateways to national and global knowledge".
Mission:
D.D.M. College Library is one of the important central facilities of the College catering to the information needs of students and faculty in Arts, Physical Sciences, Biosciences and IT. This library building was inaugurated by on .
The main objective is to make the Library the most effective Learning Resource centre to contribute to the quality of higher education. The library also created learning environment by establishing Internet browsing area for accessing e-resources.
Building Area:
- Total area of the library: 549 Sq. Mts.
- Total seating capacity- 30 person in each rooms
- Reading Rooms- 3 nos.
- IT zone for accessing e-resources
General Rules:
- Members shall observe silence in the reading halls.
- Don't use cell phone in the Library.
- Members shall not engage in conversation in any part of the library so as to cause annoyance to any other reader.
- Members shall not smoke, or spit in any part of the library.
- Members shall not write upon, damage or mark any book belonging to the library.
- Members shall not shelve books and periodicals as that disturb the prescribed order.
- Members are responsible for any damage caused by them to the books or any other property belonging to the library and shall be required to pay the penalty imposed upon them by the Librarian.
- The members caught tearing pages/stealing of books will be suspended forthwith from using the library facilities and further disciplinary action will be initiated against them by the University.
- Members shall not bring personal belongings (including Books and other printed material) and library books borrowed by them inside the library.
- Members leaving the library should stop at the exit so that the material borrowed or taken out of the library by them can be checked.
- Upon any infringement of the library rules members shall forfeit the privileges of admission and membership of the library.
- The Librarian reserves the right to suspend the membership of any member found misbehaving, abusing the library staff or behaving in an indecent manner.
Circulation of Books & Borrowing Facility
- Circulation Section manages Issue, Return and Renewal of Books.
- The privilege of borrowing books from the library is restricted to College community only.
- Faculty and Staff can enroll as library members
- Books are borrowed only against the Fee Card issued by the College.
- Students can renew their books after 14 days.
- They should personally borrow books at Circulation Counter.
- The Member should present his/her fee card for borrowing books, failing which the library staff can refuse to issue books to him/her.
- Transfer of Books is not permissible.

- Members are advised to thoroughly check the books before borrowing.
- Books given for loan can be renewed for a further period provided no other reader has reserved the same.
- The Loan period may be shortened by the librarian if the books are on special demand.
- A member can reserve a book which is on loan by filling a prescribed form available at circulation section.
- The Librarian reserves the right to recall any book from any member at any time.
- Project Coordinators (Permanent faculty member) should personally borrow books purchased under Projects.
- Transfer of Books is not permissible
- Loss of book should be immediately reported to the Librarian and be replaced with the current edition.
Books Not for Circulation:
- Reference Books, Reserve Books, Journals and Magazines are not for circulation.
Institutional Library card:
- Books can be borrowed only against the Institutional library card issued by the College. The Member should present his/her library card for borrowing books, failing which the library staff reserves the right to refuse issue of books to him/her.
- Library borrower card is not transferable
- Members should report the loss of Institutional library card issued by the college immediately, if any to Library Circulation Counter to avoid misuse.
Loss of Books:
- Loss of book by the borrower should be reported to the Circulation immediately.
- Further, the borrower shall replace the book within 15 days
- If the book of a multi volume set is damaged or lost, the library member shall be liable to replace the whole set.
Internet Facility:
- Internet facility is available for the regular members of college only.
- Library is providing Internet facilities- Browsing Area, computer workstation
- Users are encouraged to make use of this facility only to support their academic and research activities.
- Users are discouraged USB devices/ pen drives for data transfer to avoid the entry of computer virus. Such file/data transfer can be done as e-mail attachments.
- It is everyone’s collective responsibility to ensure the safety of the system. Users are advised to bring to the notice of the Librarian any misuse of the system. Librarian reserves the right to stop extending this facility to a person found misusing, apart from initiating action as per the rules laid by the college authorities.
ICT Infrastructure:
- Electronic Resource Management package for e-journals: The college has subscribed the on-line access to INFLIBNET (separate password for each department), British Council Library and Shodh Ganga. These tools enable the faculty as well students in their development of academic outlook and research activities.
- In-house/remote access to e-publications: Available through INFLIBNET, British Council Library and Shodh Ganga.

Special Services for Visually Challenged Members:
- Visually challenged members are assisted to library by fellow students.
- Library is situated on the ground floor for the convenience of the visually challenged members.
- Procurement of brail books and audio CD’s are in process.
- The College has implemented special provision of issuing more books to the differently-abled students.
- The entrance to the library has ramp facility for the benefit of these students.
User Education & Information Literacy Programs:
- User Education, Information literacy programmes are held on regular basis.
- Number of information literacy trainings organized: Two programmes on information literacy training: (i) One week Institutional Management Software Training programme by Orell Honeycomb, Kerala, (ii) On-line training on information using open access software and their utilities by IT Dept, DDMC with the help of IIT, Mumbai
- Training in Accessing E-Resources
E-Resources;
- Online (Secured Internet) Access to subscribed E-Resources is available in the campus premises (Campus IPs) only and restricted to regular college members.
- E-Resources can be used only for Academic purpose (not for commercial purposes).

Library Advisory Committee:
The library has an Advisory Committee which is composed of one Assistant Professor as a Convener, two Joint Conveners (one Assistant Professor and other Post Graduate Teacher) and five members consisting of both Assistant Professors and Post Graduate Teachers. The main objective of the committee is to supervise and give timely suggestions to the Librarian for the upliftment of the standard of the library.
Infrastructure of the library:
- The library comprises of a Librarian, one sorter and two library assistants/Group D. staffs
- The library has 3 reading rooms, one each for male students, female students and faculty members.
- The reading rooms are well ventilated with adequate number of tables and chairs. There is property counter outside the reading room.
- Newspaper rack has been procured for the convenience of reading and has been placed at proper place.
- Book trolley is present for the convenience of the library staff for the proper management of books from the circulation counter to the book shelves.
- The Journals are properly displayed in the journal rack.
- There is a separate browsing area for users with internet facility with a UPS backup and printer.
- Cataloguing counter is present for easy access of books.
- Any information pertaining to the library matters are displayed on the notice board
- Library advisory committee is open to any kind of suggestions which will help in raising the standard of the library and therefore a suggestion box is placed outside the library.
- To provide better facility to the users, library has a water cooler and a toilet.
- To prevent any untoward incident fire extinguishers are present outside the reading room.
Extent of the use of Services:
- Average number of walk-ins : ≥ 50 persons per day
- Average number of books issued/returned: 30 books per day
- Ratio of library books to students enrolled: 11:1
- Average number of books added during last three years: 1604 nos. of books
- Average number of login to e-resources:10 per day
- Average number of e-resources downloaded/printed: 10 per day
List of printed journals and newspapers:
- Three newspapers viz. Dainik Sambad, Anandabazar Patrika and The Telegraph are subscribed.
- The journals available in the college library are all subscribed.

List of books available in the library (Subject wise):
The college has students mainly belonging to scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and economically backward class therefore the library has maximum number of text books. For the benefit of the students library has collection of previous years question papers.
